Overview

Scalar is seeking an experienced Principal to join its Valuation Services Group, specializing in complex securities and derivative instruments. This role is responsible for leading highly technical valuation engagements, overseeing client relationships, and managing teams across multiple projects.

This position is ideal for individuals with deep expertise in structured securities, derivatives, and illiquid investments, who also have a proven ability to lead engagements, develop talent, and operate in a high-performance, client-facing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee complex valuation engagements, including derivatives, structured products, private credit, and Level III assets for financial reporting, tax, and transaction advisory purposes 
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, auditors, legal counsel, and boards on technical valuation matters 
  • Provide subject matter expertise in the valuation of complex instruments, including options valued using binomial lattice models, forward agreements, swaps, convertible securities, contingent consideration, and other bespoke financial instruments 
  • Review and approve advanced financial models, including Monte Carlo simulations, binomial lattice models, option-pricing models, and scenario-based valuation frameworks 
  • Manage engagement teams, including delegating work, reviewing analyses, and ensuring timely and high-quality deliverables 
  • Oversee multiple engagements simultaneously, ensuring deadlines, quality standards, and client expectations are consistently met 
  • Provide mentorship and professional development to junior team members, fostering technical growth and accountability 
  • Assist in the development of internal methodologies, best practices, and scalable valuation frameworks 
  • Support business development efforts, including participating in client pitches, proposal development, and expanding existing client relationships 
  • Prepare and review valuation reports, technical memoranda, and presentations for senior stakeholders, including boards and institutional investors 
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or a related field; advanced degree preferred 
  • 8+ years of experience in valuation, investment banking, transaction advisory, or a related field 
  • Demonstrated expertise in valuing complex securities and derivatives, including experience with binomial lattice models, forward agreements, swaps, Monte Carlo simulations, and other advanced valuation techniques 
  • Strong understanding of ASC 820, ASC 815, ASC 718, and other relevant accounting guidance 
  • Proven experience managing engagements and leading teams in a client-facing environment 
  • Exceptional financial modeling, analytical, and problem-solving skills 
  • Ability to communicate complex concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences 
  • High level of accountability, attention to detail, and intellectual curiosity 
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines 
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience with programming or data tools is a plus 
  • Familiarity with or willingness to leverage AI tools to enhance productivity and analytical workflows 
  • Professional designation required (e.g., ASA, CFA, CVA)
